FENCING

I started fencing as a freshman in high school which would have been 1978.  I fenced with a club in El Paso through high school until I went to Texas A&M where I fenced at the collegiate level for four years.

Fencing was always more of a hobby than a serious endeavor for me. That is until 1997 when I discovered that Seattle has a very large fencing community.  I fenced with a small club near my home until I decided to take things a little more seriously and began working with a coach at the Salle Auriol of Seattle.

This  very good fencing school was started by the fencing Master Leon Auriol.  I am being coached by one of his long time students Charlie Sheffer who you can see with me in this photo from the Western Region Sectional Championships circa 2000.

I have met some really great friends fencing in Seattle.  At the age of 38 I am among the older generation of fencers though not nearly the oldest.  Fencing teams are made up of three members and three of us among the 'older' group formed a team called the MOD team.  MOD stands for Married Old Dudes.  Below are the members of the MOD Team:

Chris, Nick, and Aaron
